Burnet, MFalls track teams perform well at Salado meet

Burnet and Marble Falls high school track and field athletes competed in the Salado meet March 11 before leaving for Spring Break.

In the boys varsity team standings, Burnet finished second with 101 points, while Marble Falls was fifth with 71 points. Burnet was third in the boys junior varsity team standings with 127 points followed by Marble Falls with 101 points.

In the girls varsity standings, Burnet finished third with 116 points, while Marble Falls was tied for sixth with 43 points. The Lady Dawgs won the team championship in the junior varsity division with 131 points, while Marble Falls was fifth with 62 points.

Sophomore Grant Jones led the Burnet boys varsity team with gold medals in the long jump and triple jump and silver medals as a member of the 4×100-meter relay and the 4×200-meter relay, and a bronze medal in the 4×400-meter relay team. Joining Jones on the 4×400-meter relay team were Jackson Crawford, Dash Denton and Braden Ellet-Clark.

“Three baseball guys that came out on their evening off to compete,” Bulldogs head coach Ben Speer said. “When you have teammates like these, you can do a lot with any program. I really enjoyed that our mile relay team was made up of 4 three-sport athletes. These are guys who are willing to compete across the board at whatever sport they’re in. Burnet is a pretty special place that still always supports sharing kids during overlapping seasons. (Baseball head) coach (Russell) Houston has helped our track program by encouraging these guys to compete whenever possible.”

Head coach Crystal Shipley noted the Lady Dawgs, who have 6 a.m. practices, had so many outstanding performers that it was difficult to pick only three.

“We have a lot of talent,” she said. “There is so much potential right now, and we are moving the puzzle pieces around every week to get all the athletes in the best places to see individual and team success. It is going to be a great season.”

She did state, however, that coaches must see two qualities from their athletes this early in the season.

“I think ‘buy-in’ and trust are a must right now,” she said. “The girls are slowly trusting us as coaches and learning to love track and field. We lose so many upperclassmen each year, so holding onto our kids for all four years is vital right now. All of our coaches are working on getting our athletes to develop a passion for this sport. To do that, we have to improve and win some medals. Kids don’t want to do this sport if they don’t feel successful. We are doing everything we can to help them see success.”

Speer said he has enjoyed working with Shipley and the Lady Dawgs, adding coaches are helping to develop and encourage athletes to perform at their best and are sharing the workload, too.

“It’s about Burnet, not Lady Dawg or Bulldog track,” he said. “It’s about us supporting one another. I hope everyone is able to see how we work together when they come out and watch the next meet, which are Bulldog Relays on March 24.”
